2021/22 Preview 33: Southampton

Man City travel to the south coast this weekend in the hope of making it 13 Premier League wins in a row, when they take on Southampton at St Mary's Stadium.

The Blues will be all too aware though, that the Saints are one of only three teams to prevent them from scoring in the league this term.

The 0-0 stalemate at the Etihad Stadium between the pair back in September where City had to wait until the 90th minute to muster a shot on target will provide a stark reminder that this will be no easy trip for Pep Guardiola's men.

Southampton could become just the second team to stop a Pep Guardiola side from scoring in both Premier League fixtures in a single season after Manchester United in the 2020/21 season.

On paper it looks pretty straightforward right? City have only lost 1 of their last 12 against Southampton in all competitions and only lost 2 in 7 away to the Saints. City have only also failed to score in 1 of their last 9 visits to St Mary's but it's rare that the Blues have it all their own way when they visit SO14.

The two sides are meeting for the 97th time in all competitions. City have won 38 (39.58%), drawn 26 (27.08%) and lost 32 (33.33%) of the previous 96 encounters. The Blues have scored 150 goals against the Saints at a rate of 1.56 goals per game (gpg) and have failed to score on just 18 occastions (18.75%). City have conceded 129 times against Southampton in all competitions (1.34 gpg) and kept a clean sheet 25 times (26.04%).

In terms of away matches at Southampton, this will be the 48th fixture. City have won just 15 of the previous 47 (31.91%), drawing 11 (23.40%) and losing the other 21 (44.68%). The Blues have scored 58 goals in those matches (1.23 gpg) and have failed to score in 11 of those visits (23.40%). City have conceded 67 goals on their travels to Southampton at at a rate of 1.43 goals per game and have kept a clean sheet on 15 occasions (31.91%).

If we look at just the Premier League clashes between the pair, they are meeting for the 36th time. City have won 20 (57.14%), drawn 8 (22.86%) and lost just 7 (20.00%) of the previous 35 encounters - although I'll never forgive them for winning that final game at Maine Road! CIty have scored 62 goals against Southampton (1.77 gpg) and have only failed to score in 6 matches (17.14%). The Blues have conceded 36 Premier League goals against the Saints (1.03 gpg) and have kept a shut out on 12 occasions (34.29%).

In terms of away Premier League matches at Southampton, this will be the 18th encounter. City have won 9 (52.94%), drawn 4 (23.53%) and lost 4 (23.53%) of the previous 17 meetings on the South Coast. The Blues have scored 24 Premier League away goals against the Saints (1.41 gpg) and have failed to score on just 3 vistis (17.64%). City have conceded 15 goals at a lowly rate of 0.88 goals per game and have kept 9 clean sheets during that time (52.94%).

Potential milestone - Gabriel Jesus could be making his 150th Premier League appearance for the club.
